A transparent quote, and what that actually means

“Fixed price” is easy to say. What makes a price hold is how much of the job the quotation actually describes. Ours sets out, line by line:

Pre-works inspection and testing — insulation resistance, continuity, earth fault loop impedance, existing bonding and tails assessed before we price the work.
Named equipment — consumer unit by make, model and way count, not “new fuse board”.
Meter tails and main bonding — either included, or stated as a conditional cost with a figure attached.
Certification and notification — Electrical Installation Certificate, schedule of test results, and Part P notification through our registration.
Named conditional items — what could change the price, and by how much, rather than leaving it open.

That last line is what makes a fixed price honest rather than fictional. Nobody can guarantee a price for work inside walls they have not opened. What we can do is define the boundary: this price covers this scope, and here is exactly what would fall outside it and what it would cost.

Why quotes for the same job differ so much

Almost always because they are describing different jobs. On a rewire the variables are the accessory count, whether making good means filling or plastering, and whether decoration is included. On a board change, whether tails and bonding are in the price or become an extra when found wanting.

Compare quotes on scope before you compare totals. The cheapest quote is usually the one with the least in it — and you pay the difference later, in plaster, sockets and argument.
