Whether a cooker needs its own circuit or can go on a plug depends on its rated load, and the answer is often not what the appliance manual implies.
What gets checked before anything is connected
A cooker is one of the heaviest loads in a house. Most of the work is making sure what is already there can carry it.
The rating of the existing circuit
We check the circuit is rated for the appliance before connecting it. This is the one that matters.
Cable size and route
A cable sized for an old cooker is not always sized for a new one.
The protective device
The breaker has to match the cable and the load, not just the appliance.
The outlet plate
Fitted or moved so the connection is accessible and not behind the appliance.

The detail
Many single ovens draw under 3kW and can be connected to a suitable socket. Ranges, double ovens and most hobs draw considerably more and need a dedicated circuit run in the correct cable size, terminated at a cooker control switch.
Where a cooker circuit already exists it is worth checking what it was sized for. A circuit installed for a 1980s cooker may not suit a modern induction hob, and the cable inside the wall is the part that cannot be upgraded without disruption.
Diversity applies to cooking appliances, which is why a cooker circuit is not simply rated at the full connected load. It is calculated, and getting it wrong in either direction causes either nuisance tripping or a circuit working harder than it should.

Can my existing circuit take a new cooker?
Sometimes, and it is the first thing to check rather than assume. A modern oven and induction hob can ask considerably more of a circuit than what they replaced, and the cable and protection have to suit.
Do I need a separate cooker circuit?
Most freestanding cookers and built-in ovens with hobs do. Plugging one into a ring final circuit is a common arrangement that the circuit was never designed for.
Is a cooker installation notifiable?
A new circuit is notifiable work and is certified and notified under Part P. Replacing like for like on an existing suitable circuit generally is not, but it still gets tested.
Do you take the old appliance away?
Disconnecting and moving the old one out is part of the job. Disposal is something to agree up front rather than assume either way.
