Outdoor lighting has to survive weather, and the rating that describes it is the IP number. Anything exposed needs to be rated for where it is actually mounted.
Getting it in the right place
Most floodlight and PIR installs are done in a single visit, including running a new outdoor circuit if there is not one already.
Height and angle
Too high and the sensor sees the whole street. Too low and it sees the cat.
What triggers it
PIR sees heat crossing its field. Aiming it along a path rather than at one works better.
Warm or cold light
Cold white reads as security. Warm white reads as a house. Both are fine, they just say different things.
Weatherproofing
The rating has to suit where it actually is, not where the box photo suggests.

The detail
PIR-controlled floodlights react to movement and heat, which suits driveways, side returns and back doors. Dusk-till-dawn fittings run at low output all night and suit paths, steps and anywhere the point is seeing your way rather than deterrence.
Aim matters as much as brightness. A floodlight pointed across a boundary is a nuisance to a neighbour and, in practice, ends up switched off. Angled down onto your own ground it does the same job without the argument.
Outdoor circuits need RCD protection, and cable run outside or underground needs appropriate protection and depth. Supply is usually taken from a fused spur rather than the lighting circuit, so the load is separated from the internal lights.

Can you fit a floodlight without cabling across the garden?
It depends where the nearest suitable supply is. Anything outdoors needs the right rating for where it actually sits, RCD protection, and a cable route that will not be drilled through later.
Do outdoor sockets need anything special?
Yes. They need an enclosure rated for outdoor use and RCD protection, and the circuit behind them has to be suitable. An indoor socket in a plastic box on an outside wall is a common and genuinely dangerous shortcut.
Can you run power to a shed or garden office?
Yes. That means armoured cable at the right burial depth with its own way at the consumer unit, not an extension lead out through a window.
Will a PIR light keep coming on by itself?
Badly sited ones do, usually because they are aimed at a road, a tree or next door. Placement and sensitivity matter as much as the fitting.
