Electrical Fault Finding & Repairs

A breaker that keeps tripping is not being awkward – it is doing its job. The trip is the safety system working, and something is setting it off. The trick is finding out what, before the reset button wears out.

Proper diagnosis with proper test kit – not the switch-it-off-and-on-again method

What people usually call us about

  • A breaker or RCD that keeps tripping, either instantly or at random
  • A dead socket, circuit or whole room
  • Lights flickering or dimming when an appliance kicks in
  • Buzzing or humming from a socket, switch or the board
  • Warm or discoloured sockets and plugs
  • Little shocks off taps or appliances – treat that one as urgent
  • Total loss of power when the neighbours still have theirs

How we actually find it

Guesswork is expensive, and swapping parts until something works is not diagnosis – it is just shopping. We isolate circuit by circuit and use insulation resistance and continuity testing to corner the fault, so we find the real one rather than the most likely-looking suspect. Nine times out of ten it is a failed appliance, water in an outside socket or light, cable nicked by a nail or screw, a tired RCD, or old wiring finally giving up.

Then we fix it

Most faults we find, we mend on the same visit. If what we uncover points to something bigger – widespread deterioration, or a consumer unit that is no longer up to the job – we will show you, explain it, and quote separately. No pressure, and nothing done that you did not agree to.

When to stop and just call us

Put the kettle down and call 07502 396654 straight away if you can smell burning, see scorch marks or melted plastic, hear crackling from a socket or the board, or the consumer unit will not reset at all. Electrical Safety First has sensible guidance on what counts as an emergency, but when in doubt, phone.

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no call-out fee, across Dagenham, Barking, Ilford, Stratford and beyond. NICEIC approved. Part P compliant. Fully insured.

Why do circuits trip in the first place?

A tripping circuit is almost always one of a handful of things, and understanding which helps explain why proper diagnosis matters. An overload happens when a circuit is asked to carry more than it was designed for – too many high-power appliances at once. A short circuit is a live and neutral wire making direct contact, which trips instantly and firmly. An earth fault is current leaking to earth, often through moisture or damaged insulation, and it is the one an RCD is specifically there to catch. Each has a different cause and a different fix, which is why we test to identify the type rather than simply resetting and hoping.

Our diagnostic process, step by step

When we arrive, we start by listening – when did it start, what was running at the time, does it trip immediately or after a while? Then we isolate the installation circuit by circuit and reintroduce them one at a time, using insulation resistance and continuity testing to measure exactly where the fault lies. This methodical approach finds the real problem instead of masking a symptom, and it means we can tell you not just what is wrong but why, and what it will take to put right.

The faults we find most often

In the great majority of homes it comes down to a failed appliance (kettles, washing machines and immersion heaters are frequent offenders), water ingress into an outside socket or light fitting, cable damaged by a nail or screw during past DIY, a worn or faulty RCD, or simply old wiring that has reached the end of its life. Most of these we repair on the same visit. Where the fault points to something larger, such as a consumer unit that is no longer adequate or deterioration calling for a rewire, we show you exactly what we found and quote separately, with no pressure.

Is it an emergency, or can it wait?

Being straight with you saves money. A single dead socket, or a circuit that trips once and then behaves, is usually something we can book in at a convenient time. But treat it as urgent – and call straight away – if you can smell burning, see scorch marks or melted plastic, hear crackling, get shocks from taps or appliances, or the board will not reset at all. If in doubt, phone and describe it; we will tell you honestly whether it needs someone tonight. Electrical Safety First also has clear guidance on what counts as a genuine emergency.

Available across East London, 24/7

We cover Dagenham, Barking, Ilford, Romford, Stratford and beyond, around the clock, with no call-out fee. Call 07502 396654 whenever a circuit is misbehaving – the sooner we look, the simpler the fix usually is.

Fault finding for landlords and businesses

Intermittent faults are the bane of any landlord or business owner – a circuit that trips only occasionally, a light that flickers when the heating kicks in, a socket that works until it does not. Because these come and go, they are exactly the sort of thing a rushed visit misses. Our methodical, test-based approach is built for precisely this: we find the root cause rather than chasing the symptom, document what we find, and give you a clear fix. For commercial premises we can work outside trading hours at no extra cost, so a nagging fault never has to shut your business for a day.

Common questions about fault finding

Can you always find the fault? The overwhelming majority, yes – systematic testing is very good at cornering even intermittent problems. Will you fix it the same day? Usually, if it is a repair within the visit; larger works we quote separately. Is a tripping RCD dangerous? The trip itself is protection working, but a circuit that keeps tripping needs investigating rather than ignoring. Do you charge a call-out fee to come and look? No – no call-out fee, and a clear price for any repair before we start.

Get a misbehaving circuit looked at

Do not live with a fault, and please do not tape a breaker on to stop it tripping – that removes the very protection keeping you safe. Call 07502 396654 and we will get to the bottom of it, across Dagenham, Barking, Ilford and East London, 24 hours a day.

The testing behind a proper diagnosis

“Fault finding” sounds like poking around until something works, but done properly it is a precise, measurement-led process. Insulation resistance testing checks whether the insulation around the cables is still doing its job or has broken down, letting current leak where it should not. Continuity testing confirms that earth paths and connections are intact and unbroken. Polarity checks make sure live and neutral are the right way round. Reading these together, circuit by circuit, tells us not just that there is a fault but exactly where it sits and what kind it is – which is the difference between a lasting fix and a lucky guess.

The usual suspects, in detail

Some culprits come up again and again. Heating elements – in kettles, immersion heaters, washing machines and dishwashers – fail as they age and start leaking current to earth, tripping the RCD. Outdoor sockets, garden lights and shed supplies let in moisture, especially after wet weather. Cables get pierced by a picture hook or a floorboard screw during otherwise innocent DIY. And in older homes, decades-old insulation simply degrades. Knowing the common patterns means we often narrow things down quickly, but we always confirm with testing rather than assuming.

Preventing the next one

Once we have fixed the immediate fault, we are happy to point out anything that is likely to cause trouble down the line – an overloaded circuit crying out for its own supply, an ageing board with no RCD protection, or outdoor fittings past their best. There is never any pressure to act, but forewarned is cheaper than caught out. The single best preventative step for any older home is a periodic EICR, which catches deterioration before it becomes a fault. Call 07502 396654 any time a circuit is misbehaving.

Do not ignore a warning sign

Electrical faults rarely fix themselves, and the small ones have a habit of becoming big ones. A circuit that trips, a socket that runs warm, a light that flickers – each is your installation telling you something, and the sooner it is looked at the simpler and cheaper the fix usually is. Our fault-finding service is fast, methodical and available around the clock across East London, with no call-out fee and a clear price before any repair. Call 07502 396654 the moment something is not right, and we will get to the bottom of it properly.

And if it turns out to be something simple – a single failed appliance, a one-off nuisance trip – we will tell you exactly that, rather than dressing it up into a bigger job. Honesty is how a local firm keeps its reputation over 15 years and 174 five-star reviews, and it is how we would want to be treated ourselves. Whatever the fault, big or small, you will get a clear explanation, a fair price, and work that actually solves the problem for good.
