What we get called to in Hackney

What to do while you wait
Switch off the circuit, not the house
If something is arcing, scorched or smells hot, turn off the breaker for that circuit at the consumer unit and leave it off. You keep the lights on everywhere else, and nothing gets worse while we are on our way.
Leave it as you found it
Resist swapping the socket or resetting the breaker repeatedly. A fault that has been reset a dozen times is harder to find, and the state you found it in is often the most useful evidence we have.
Tell us what changed
What was switched on, what work has been done recently, whether water has got in. Most faults have a cause somebody already knows about, and hearing it on the phone shortens the visit.
If you cannot get to the consumer unit safely, or there is water involved, or you can smell burning and cannot tell where it is coming from, do not go looking. Get everyone out of that room and ring us.
